The What & Why of Raw Food
Heat changes the makeup of food and destroys up to 85% of its nutritional value. Cooking food kills life force and enzymes. The digestive system has to work harder and longer to process cooked foods to get nutrition & energy from it. Since we are what we eat, consuming the energy of "dead foods" (ie: cooked foods) makes both our physical and energy bodies feel heavy and stagnant. This is especially true when it comes to consuming dead animals.
Raw foods, or "living foods," are plant based (fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts) and never heated above 115 degrees. Raw food is easy to digest and provides the maximum amount of energy with minimal bodily effort. The first thing that people always say about going raw is that they have more energy then they've ever had in their life. I can attest to that. (And I'm not even 100% raw!)
Physical Benefits of Raw Food:
Physical Benefits of Raw Food:
Most people are lead to the raw lifestyle by a desire to lose weight. But weight loss is only one of the many benefits of eating raw. Raw food provides better skin, a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer, better digestion, increased energy, the "raw glow," reduced inflammation, spiritual lightness, and more.
Research has shown that one can prevent a body's healthy cells from turning into malignant cancerous cells by consuming mostly a raw food diet & whole organic foods. Our body needs REAL food! Just look around the web and you'll discover the extraordinary stories of people who have gone raw and cured themselves from almost every disease imaginable.
In addition, many people call raw food the fountain of youth. People who eat raw don't seem to age - or even reverse the process. I'll never forget meeting the middle aged woman whose white hair turned back to brown after going raw.

Mental & Emotional Benefits of Raw Food:
This nation has an unhealthy relationship to food. We all know disease and obesity is rampant and yet we still continue eating processed chemicals disguised as food. We are addicted to the nutritionally empty but calorie dense foods our families and the media have fed us. We eat more and more and more trying to satisfy a need that can never be filled by the "food" in the SAD.
When a person goes raw they develop a new healthy relationship to food. They discover that food really can be healthy, delicious, and highly satisfying. Then, they are able to break addictive cycles around eating and see food for what it truly is (fuel) and what it is not (an emotional crutch.)

When we are eating raw we are always in a state of natural detoxification. It balances blood sugar and provides a natural high that keeps us feeling healthy, vibrant and happy. Raw food provides more clarity which leads to more joy.
Spiritual Benefits of Raw Food:
Spiritual Benefits of Raw Food:
David Wolfe, a leader in the world of raw food, puts it best; "Enlightenment is just that - making yourself lighter. Raw plant foods, laughter, joy, bliss and unconditional love all exist on the same frequency. Tuning into this frequency raises the overall vibration of your energy field, causing anything that is vibrating at a lower frequency, such as fear, pain, doubt, cancer, ugliness, depression and toxins to eventually percolate out to be ejected from the body. Eating raw plant foods triggers a transformative process that allows you to rebuild yourself at a deep soul level."
And Paul Nison in Raw Knowledge says "In order to reach the soul, you can't be weighed down with food. It's important to have a spiritual context when you set out to live the raw food lifestyle, otherwise, this newfound energy does not feel grounded to the average person. Once we clean our minds and bodies we will be able ready to get in touch with a much higher place."
Then, of course, there's the whole aspect of "non-harm" that comes with eating a raw vegan diet. Not sure what's more spiritual than that. :)
So there you have it...
I won't lie and say that going raw is easy. It's a learning process, and like anything, it will take some time. What I CAN say is that it's worth it.

Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
